Sun, 8 November 2009 Here's Episode 24 of the Tomcast, and its another good one. This one is quite varied but its all mighty fine house music. Theres a bit of tech, a bit of chunkier stuff, some slightly retro bits and even a bit of dubstep, and of course my trademark happy ending. Another solid hours worth of mixing with lots of interesting tricks and layering. I'm pleased with this one. Two more gigs at Fluid coming up, on Friday 20th and Saturday 28th November. And I've just invested in a Native Instruments Maschine, so I'm going to be making a few beats in the near future! I've literally only just got it so i'm still finding my way around it, but i'm really excited about the prospect of producing again. Watch this space! Tue, 20 October 2009 Welcome to the wonderful Episode 23! The genre this week is tenuously called 'ghetto tech', so basically this mix is full of the dirtier, harder side of tech house, with lots of bleepy goodness and a bit of fidget thrown in. The tempo is high and the mixing is fast. It features quite a few tracks i'm well into at the moment - Riverside is in there of course, but i did manage to resist the temptation to put that Major Lazer track in because its just everywhere! There's a mystery track in the middle as well which i nicked from a DJ Zinc mix, but i've no idea what it's called! Its a massive tune though. I ended up playing for 6 and a half hours straight at Fluid the other day, which is probably the longest time ive ever spent mixing! Playing out is playing out though, and i got paid so it cant be bad. Might be doing a bit of warming up for Thirsty Disko next weekend too. So enjoy this mix, and there should be a Minimix on the way soon! Wed, 30 September 2009 The latest episode of my podcast shows a slightly more commercial side of my mixing. Think vocals, big breakdowns and hands in the air piano moments. I've tried my best to stop it getting too cheesy though, so while there's lots of more familiar stuff, I've kept things fresh and interesting. Of course there's a little bit of tech house thrown in too to stitch it all together. Whilst i do like the more underground stuff, I think its important to play to the crowd and give them something a bit more familiar from time to time, so i thought i'd go all out and go for my most commercial Tomcast yet, although my own personal touch takes this beyond your average big room house mix. It's crammed full of nicely uplifiting songs with plenty of my own tricks blended into the mix. Got a gig on the 17th October at my old haunt, Fluid in Farringdon. My first gig for a while and i'm looking forward to road testing some new tracks and tricks! Tue, 8 September 2009 Here's a quick and dirty Tomcast i just made... some reasonably nasty electro on here, knocked it up quickly as i needed an electro mix to send off before i go to Bestival to try and get some gigs sorted for afterwards! Tue, 1 September 2009 As promised, here's the first in my Minimix series, complimenting my main Tomcast series, and to kick things off we have a little mix that I just made up on the spot - thats the idea of this series.. spontaneous little mixes that i can record there and then. It starts with a bit of MSTRKRFT (who i saw at the weekend and they were brilliant!), then it moves stright into fairly tough, pumping techno, before descending back towards deep, uplifting house near the end. Ten songs crammed into 21 minutes, and all newly downloaded stuff! Well keep an eye out for more bite sized snippets of mixing skills soon! Sat, 22 August 2009 Here we are at last at episode 20! This one's taken me ages. Several reasons, there was a new version of Traktor which took me a while to get used to, I've been downloading a huge amount of music which has been taking up a lot of my spare time, and there have been loads of other distractions. Then it took me several tries to get this recorded but i've finally nailed it, this is an excellent mix! Its an excellent selection of the techiest of tech house, plenty of vocals to keep things interesting, and full advantage taken of the added effects possibilities of the new Traktor Pro. From now on the format of the Tomcast will be changing a bit. I'll still be doing full length mixes, but i'm going to try and get a 15-20 minute minimix out every week or so as well. I'll still be cramming as many tracks and tricks in as possible, but now it's bite size! So look out for the first Tomcast minimix soon! Sun, 12 July 2009 It's only been a week since the last one but I'm back with another new mix... well i had nothing better to do on a nice Sunday afternoon so decided to lay down some filth! This mix features my first foray into the murky world of dubstep, but only a couple of tracks. Like many DJs, I've been gradually succumbing to the wobbly charms of dubstep for some time now, and its the perfect thing to add a bit of variety and pure wrongness to sets like this. I don't pretend to be a dubstep DJ because i'm not and don't want to be, but I love dropping some of those silly basslines! It's another excellent mix with a sustained energy level. It flickers between dubstep, crunchy electro and all out filthy filthy house music with a bit of wonky techy stuff to sew it all together. This is another one that'll be getting sent out to the right people to hopefully get some gigs sorted out soon. Don't forget my twitter - www.twitter.com/tomsawyerthedj - and myspace - myspace.com/tomsawyerthedj - I always value any feedback and if you know of anyone who might be able to sort out some London gigs for me, please, please send them my way! Sat, 4 July 2009 Hello! Episode 18 of the Tomcast series takes you on a journey deep into the world of underground dance music, featuring some dark, trippy and downright bizarre tech house. This is a solid mix making good use of all 4 decks to create a multi textured landscape, full of quirky breakdowns, razor sharp build ups and chunky drops. Once again im pleased with this one! Not much to report on the gig front, but i'm going to start making a real effort to get these last few podcasts heard by the right people so i should have something lined up soon. Glastonbury was awesome as expected... as always i ended up missing most of the music i planned to see, but special mentions go to Krafty Kuts for his awesomely feel-good sunset set on the G Stage and Rusko for filling the Glade with some ridiculously sick dubstep. Look out for a breakbeat/ dubstep flavoured Tomcast soon! Anyways I hope you enjoy this Tomcast! and I've upped the quality from 160 to 192 kbps as well so it should be that little bit crisper! Tue, 16 June 2009 At long last, here's the new Tomcast! It's been absolutely ages since i've made anything but i'm back on form with this one. For Episode 17 I serve up a tasty portion of groovy electro flavoured disco, sprinkled with some techy treats. There's a couple of disco classics (Earth Wind & Fire, Anita Ward) mixed in with some surprisingly funky tech house and a couple of absolute stormers. It's been a long time coming but i'm pleased to say this one rocks! Apologies for lateness with this one... it's not that i'm going off mixing, far from it. Mixing is still my life and i love it, but its taken me a while to build up some fresh new tracks and come up with a mix that i'm satisfied with and that offers something different to my usual. Add to that the distraction of Glastonbury fast approaching, and thats my excuse! I can't wait, its the biggest, best, most crazy festival in the world and ive got a feeling its going to be a good one. I'll get to see a whole load of my favourite DJs and acts (Erol Alkan, Josh Wink, Deadmau5, Freq Nasty, Stanton Warriors, the list goes on) and legends like Blur and Madness too... anyone whos been to Glasto will tell you it consumes your life for weeks beforehand. I've got a week off work once i emerge from the other side of it all so i'll try and lay down a new podcast then. In the meantime enjoy the funk, and in a week i'll be off to a field in Somerset to drink cider for 5 days!
